The nerves leave the spinal canal through small holes at each spine level called the neural foramina. Foraminal stenosis, or narrowing, occurs when the neural foramen becomes smaller from an arthritic change in the spine, resulting in a pinched nerve. Causes of foraminal stenosis include disc degeneration resulting in loss of height or disc bulges and herniation, build-up of arthritic joint tissue, and disc slippage.
